Global Youth Ministry: A Secret Weapon for Nepal
group magazine: May-June, 2010
by Russ Cline Paulas Panday was born in a remote village in Nepal and grew up as a Hindu boy in a Brahmin (high caste) family. He devoted himself to the village’s religious rituals, and the elders saw priestly potential in him. But as Paulas grew, he began questioning the meaning of those rituals and was confused by Nepal’s communist movement. At 13, Paulas began searching for more. He’d read a Bible his brother had given him, and deep in his heart he knew he was walking far from God. Paulas went from not believing in God to having a clear sense of God’s presence in his life. Like he did with St. Paul, God changed Paulas’ heart, and Paulas decided to follow Christ and serve him with his whole life. He was baptized and began sharing about Jesus in school. Paulas was insulted and tortured, and when people pressured him to deny Christ, he fled his home, family, and school. When he came across a group serving in Pokhara with Youth With a Mission, he joined the DTS (Discipleship Training School), and his faith grew. After completing the DTS, Paulas joined YWAM and wanted to use radio as a way to tell young people in his country about Christ. Paulas began the Life Messenger radio ministry, broadcasting God’s truth not only in Nepal but all over South Asia. He broadcasts programs in partnership with HCJB Global Radio in Australia, and Nepali people throughout Asia can listen to these broadcasts in their own language. Paulas’ burden is for young people who’ve left Nepal, their families, and their culture in search of work. Often they end up in jobs no one else will do. Paulas tells of countless young Nepali people who’ve heard about Christ via the radio. They write to the station, and Paulas begins a mentoring and discipling relationship with them, often leading them to Christ. Paulas’ vision and passion are contagious. Once he worshipped a false God. Then he denied God completely. Now he understands the truth of the one God, and his passion is to share this message with young people throughout South Asia.
